Correspondence, memoranda, reports, drafts and copies of legislation, petitions, legal documents, lists, maps, clippings, speeches and other material concerning military contracts, legislation affecting the military, military cases and the Senate Armed Services Committee. Topics covered include civil defense, the drafting of women, pay and benefits, the Vietnam War (especially prisoners-of-war and missing-in-action), military bases in South Carolina, each of the military braches and the volunteer army. Much of the correspondence is from constituents and military service organizations. The series documents the Senator's attempts to help South Carolina firms with military contract problems and individuals in the military. It also includes files on the Pueblo, Mayaguez and Stark Incidents, the bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon, the Grenada invasion and the raising of a B-24 aircraft from Lake Greenwood.
